Transforming Pelvic Health Through Movement and Alignment
Discover how alignment, posture, and breathing create the foundation for a healthier core and pelvic floor.
Your pelvic health is about more than just exercises like Kegels. It’s about identifying the subtle blind spots in your alignment, posture, and breathing that may be holding you back. I guide women in creating new movement patterns to unlock their body’s full potential and restore balance, strength, and confidence.
The Foundation of Pelvic Health: Alignment, Movement, and Breathing
Your pelvic health is more than one stage of life - it’s a lifelong journey. Discover how movement and alignment can transform how your core and pelvic floor work together.
Pelvic health isn’t just about solving problems - it’s about creating solutions. Whether you’re recovering from pregnancy, managing chronic discomfort, or looking to move better in everyday life, it starts with understanding the role of alignment, posture, and breathing.
Why Alignment Matters
Alignment is the foundation of a healthy core system. When your body is in proper alignment, your muscles, joints, and pelvic floor can work together as they should. But when alignment is off - even slightly - it can create imbalances that affect how your core and pelvic floor function.
Here’s why alignment is so important:
It Reduces Stress on the Pelvic Floor
Poor alignment can put extra pressure on your pelvic floor, causing it to overwork or underperform. This imbalance can lead to discomfort, dysfunction, and even leaks. It Improves Core Functionality
Your core isn’t just about abs - it’s a dynamic system that includes your diaphragm, abdominal muscles, and pelvic floor. When you’re aligned, these parts can work together seamlessly to support your body during movement. It Creates Balance and Stability
Misalignment can force certain muscles to take on more than their share of the workload, leading to pain or tightness. Realigning your posture helps distribute effort evenly, improving balance and reducing strain. It Enhances Everyday Movements
From sitting at a desk to bending, lifting, or running, alignment affects how efficiently your body moves. Better alignment means better movement, less effort, and more comfort in your daily life.
The good news? Alignment isn’t about being perfect—it’s about understanding your body’s natural patterns and making small adjustments to create lasting change. By identifying your blind spots and building new movement patterns, you can transform how your core and pelvic floor work together.
What Is a Healthy Core System?
Your core is so much more than your abs - it’s the powerhouse of your body, providing strength, stability, and support for everything you do. A healthy core system is dynamic and works as a team, integrating your diaphragm, abdominal muscles, back muscles, and pelvic floor to create balance and movement.
The Key Components of a Healthy Core System
The Diaphragm
This is your body’s main breathing muscle, located just below your ribcage. A healthy diaphragm moves freely with each breath, creating a natural rhythm that supports your core and pelvic floor. The Abdominal Muscles
These muscles, including the deep transverse abdominis, work to stabilize your spine and support your movements. When they’re properly engaged, they protect your back and enhance your strength. The Back Muscles
The muscles along your spine provide support and keep your body upright. They play a crucial role in maintaining posture and preventing strain during movement. The Pelvic Floor
Often called the foundation of the core, your pelvic floor muscles support your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. A healthy pelvic floor is flexible, strong, and responsive, adapting to your body’s needs throughout the day.
How Does a Healthy Core Work?
When these components are in harmony, your core becomes a resilient and dynamic system that supports your every move—from sitting and standing to exercising and lifting. Each part works together to provide stability, absorb pressure, and ensure your movements are efficient and pain-free.
Signs of a Healthy Core System:
You can move freely without pain or tension.
Your breathing feels natural and unrestricted.
You feel stable and supported during everyday activities.
When the Core System Isn’t Functioning Well:
Imbalances in alignment, posture, or movement patterns can disrupt this system, leading to issues like back pain, leaks, or even difficulty breathing. The good news is that small, intentional changes can help restore balance and functionality.
COMMON CHALLENGES WOMEN FACE
Many women silently endure challenges that stem from core and pelvic floor dysfunction, often thinking these issues are just part of life or something they have to live with. The truth is, these challenges are incredibly common, but they’re not normal - and they’re certainly not something you have to accept. Here are some of the most frequent concerns I see in my practice and how they may impact your daily life:
1. Leaking During Everyday Activities
Whether it’s a small leak when you sneeze, laugh, or exercise, incontinence can feel frustrating and isolating. It’s not just about the inconvenience - it’s about feeling in control of your body. Many women avoid activities they love, like running, jumping, or even lifting, out of fear of leaks.
What’s happening:
Leaking often occurs when the pelvic floor muscles aren’t functioning optimally. This could be due to poor alignment, weak or overly tight pelvic floor muscles, or a lack of coordination in the core system.
2. Persistent Back or Hip Pain
Back and hip pain often go hand in hand with pelvic floor dysfunction. These areas are closely connected and when one is out of balance, the others often compensate, leading to pain and tension.
What’s happening:
Misalignment or movement patterns that overwork certain muscles can put stress on your back and hips. This compensation may mask the underlying issue - often stemming from the core or pelvic floor.
3. Difficulty Engaging the Core
Do you ever feel like your core is “off” or weak, even after doing countless sit-ups or planks? Many women struggle to feel their core working, which can lead to poor posture, decreased strength, and an increased risk of injury.
What’s happening:
A lack of core engagement often comes from blind spots in alignment or breathing patterns. When these aren’t addressed, your core can’t fully activate or support you during movement.
4. Prolapse Symptoms
Feeling a heaviness or pressure in your pelvic area can be a sign of pelvic organ prolapse. This can occur after childbirth, during menopause, or anytime the pelvic floor is under strain.
What’s happening:
Prolapse occurs when the pelvic floor muscles are too weak or stretched to support the pelvic organs. Alignment and movement patterns play a crucial role in preventing and managing prolapse symptoms.
5. Feeling Disconnected from Your Body
Many women describe feeling disconnected from their core or pelvic floor, unsure of how to engage these areas or improve their function. This disconnect can lead to frustration and even a sense of defeat.
What’s happening:
Years of compensatory movement patterns, poor posture, or a lack of awareness can create a disconnect between the brain and the muscles of the core system. Rebuilding this connection is key to restoring function and confidence.
6. Struggling with Breathing Patterns
If you find yourself holding your breath during exercise or feeling out of breath more quickly than you should, your breathing patterns may be affecting your core and pelvic floor function.
What’s happening:
Breathing and the core are deeply connected. Improper breathing can disrupt the natural rhythm of the diaphragm and pelvic floor, leading to dysfunction and poor movement mechanics.
